Ideal Weight Calculator
Find your healthy weight range based on height. Uses BMI, Devine, Robinson, and Miller formulas.
What Is Ideal Body Weight?
Ideal body weight (IBW) is a weight estimate based on height that is associated with optimal health outcomes. It serves as a guideline rather than a precise target.
Formulas Used
- BMI Range (18.5-24.9): The CDC and WHO standard for healthy weight
- Devine Formula: Originally for dosing medications; 100 lb + 5 lb/inch over 5 ft
- Robinson Formula: Modified from Devine; considered more accurate for adults
- Miller Formula: Another commonly used estimate
Limitations of Ideal Weight Formulas
These formulas were developed from limited population data and don't account for muscle mass, bone density, age, or body composition. Athletes with high muscle mass may exceed these ranges and still be healthy.
Better Alternative
Use BMI (18.5-24.9 healthy range) combined with waist circumference for a more complete picture. Waist over 40" (men) or 35" (women) indicates higher health risk regardless of weight.
